If you're going to Helsinki....

On my list of places to go in 2013 is Helsinki, Finland. I absolutely love Finnish design and Helsinki is teeming with fantastic design shops and museums.

The Finnish Design Shop 'pop-up' shop in Helsinki which I think is now closed. But keep an eye out on their website for more pop up shops!

Have you been to Helsinki? (Or are you lucky enough to come from Helsinki?) Perhaps you can give me some tips?!

Which city do you have top of your list for 2013?

Have yourselves a very merry Wednesday all and I'll see you tomorrow!

  8. I was in Finland a few years ago. When the children were young. Now maybe things have changed. But one thing remains the same: the Finns love to design.
The Finns are on a first-name basis with design; it forms a familiar part of them daily lives. They are well acquainted with the design pedigrees of the kitchen cupboards, stocked with Arabia tableware and Iittala glassware that they use on a daily basis. Alvar Aalto's Savoy vase is often placed on the table for special occasions.
They are a true design nation, with a long history and a strong heritage in design.
And in 2012, the Finnish capital is also World Design Capital.
Helsinki Design District forms a hub of creativity in the heart of Helsinki: just over one square kilometre with more than 180 design shops, galleries, workshops . Featured on a special Helsinki Design District map, this area also includes the Design Museum, the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Forum Finland.
The capital of Finland is a great place for design lovers!

  11. I live 20 km away from Helsinki. If you have plenty of time when visiting Helsinki, I would advice you to visit also some neigboring cities like Porvoo (50 km away from Helsinki, 1 hour by boat or ½-hour by bus). Although not in Finland, Tallinn is only 2 hours boat trip away from Helsinki - and also worth visiting. Welcome to Helsinki!

  12. Unfortunately, the one time I have been to Helsinki I was a very broke college student (in Finland for a semester). But I can live vicariously through your trip ;-)

    Happy 2013 Niki!

  13. I'm Finnish and have lived in Helsinki and still visit it often, as I now live 50km from there but my Dutch blogpartner currently lives in Helsinki. As winter cherry here mentioned, the design district is a must! http://www.designdistrict.fi/design-district
I would also recommend visiting Suomenlinna, which is a maritime fortress located off the coast of Helsinki. And if you have time, as Mika already recommended, Porvoo is a beautiful city full of wooden houses.

  14. I have never been to Helsinki or Finland in general, it is time to change that! We are planning to visit our family in Germany in the summer or fall and then take a trip within Europe but our destination is still unknown. I want to travel up North, the husband down South ;) That pop-up store space is great! We looked at an apartment that had a similar feel but it was only one bedroom and didn't make sense for us but the brick, high ceilings and industrial details charmed us...

  16. Hi! I live in Helsinki aswell. First I have to say I love your blog. Then to the subject. The center of Helsinki contains alot of deigns. A area of the city I highly recomend is punavuori "the red mountain". It's full of little design shops, mostly held by the people who actually design themself.
But I'm sure where ever you go here, good design will follow you and I know you'll like it!

  17. I visited Helsinki in March. A few places I loved were Pino, an amazing little shop, and Cafe Tin Tin Tango. A book that gave great recommendations was Graphic Europe. It's written by graphic designers that live in the cities they're writing about. Have a great time!

  18. And what comes to design and furnishing, I just visited a shop called "Cobello" more about them here http://www.cobello.fi/ and also some photos in my blog here http://taloprojekti-talo-rautio.blogspot.fi/2013/01/takka-ja-sisustuskaupoilla-vantaan.html

unfortunately this is cituated in the outskirts of town, but maybe you learn to use the public transportation in Helsinki, and more information about it you find here: http://www.hsl.fi/EN/Pages/default.aspx (just write the address you want to go, and it shows you how to get there by public trasport)

  19. Hi. I live right next to Helsinki, in Espoo, and after having moved back last year, after seven years in London, I appreciate the culture and design in a whole new way. I did a post on my blog of a day in Helsinki and of cool interior shops. It's in Finnish but you can look at the pictures and click on the links to visit the shops' websites.
You can find my blog here, if you're interested. http://elisa-homeiswheretheheartis.blogspot.fi/2012/04/sisustuspaivan-satoa.html

My city to visit is Stockholm. It's been too long since my last visit and I can't wait...
